F.R.E.E. considers the judges the most important part in the verification of record attempts and competitive events. It is their mission to assure that any of these activities is carried out under strict compliance with the pertinent rules and that the F.R.E.E. principles of Safety and Fairness are followed at all times. A person can be appointed to the position of judge if he/she:

1. Has performed the duties of (Supervising/Safety/Diving) Officer orFreediver in at least one (1) previous Record Attempt verified by F.R.E.Eand must show the corresponding Appointment of Organizing Committee Form.

2. Has performed the duties of Safety Diver in at least twenty (20) dives forming part of at least one (1) Record Attempt verified by F.R.E.E and must show the corresponding Dive Profile Forms.

3. Has been nominated on outstanding merit by at least three (3) active members of the F.R.E.E. Board of Directors and must show the corresponding Letter of Nomination from each and all of these members.

At least one (1) of the above requirements must be met for nomination. All applicable documents as per the above requirements are available for the public scrutiny at F.R.E.E. All Official Judges are appointed to this position for a period of three (3) years from the date of the appointment. During this time, this person has to perform the duties of this position in at least one (1) Record Attempt verified by F.R.E.E., or must get re-certified if this criteria is not met.

F.R.E.E. requires that each record attempt must be verified by two (2) judges, one of which must be at the surface near the point of exit of the Freediver so that this judge can retrieve the Confirmation Tag(s) from the Freediver, and the other judge must witness the performance from an underwater position. The depth or length of this underwater position will be chosen by the judge and it can be as deep/long as the goal depth/length. Therefore, the judge performing these underwater duties must be qualified and properly certified to safely dive to the Goal Depth/Length of the attempt. See the Section Judges Levels for details.

Judges Restrictions

FREE allows active athletes to become judges, as their freediving knowledge and expertise can be an invaluable asset for the verification of competitive activities. However to ensure that this does not contradict with the principle of Fairness that our organization strives to maintain at all levels and times, a judge-athlete will be prohibited from acting as judge in any cagegory for which he/she has requested verification for a personal record attempt for one (1) year after this request has been received by FREE. This is not affected by whether the athlete's attempt is successful or not, however in the case where the attempt is successful and the athlete holds the current record for longer than the one year period, then the restriction will last until this record is broken by another athlete. In the Judges List, restrictions for every judge (if applicable) are listed together with their expiration time. The restrictions are listed based on the following code:
